Short History
Hasanuddin English Debating Society, well-known called as HEDS was first established in 2000 by some students of Hasanuddin University who realized the importance of the existence of a student organization that can accommodate students’ interest and talent in debating skill. Started from that point, HEDS was then developed into a very prominent student group and highly-known among debaters in Makassar and even in Southern Sulawesi. Two years only after the time it was established, HEDS was able to win the bid to be a host university for the most prestigious national English debating championship, namely the 5th IVED (Indonesian Varsities English Debate).
Development
Nowadays in 2009, HEDS has evolved as a debating society who’s very enthusiastic to participate actively in almost every type of English debating championships in regional, national, and even in international scale. Members of HEDS themselves participate actively as an educator, adjudicator, and facilitator for High-School debaters through numerous High-School debating tournaments held anually. HEDS has also contributed to bring more credits for Hasanuddin University as the best, biggest university in Eastern Indonesia through getting numerous achievements in those events. The result of the latest national championships attended by HEDS’ delegations was unpredictably awesome. UNHAS team was always able to break into the series of finals round exceeding tens of other prominent universities in all over Indonesia.
Though, by looking at the real journey of HEDS throughout its establishment, HEDS was once experiencing a great depression for years, started from 2004. Through this time, this organization was in the vacuum stage and fell into stagnancy. Anyway, as in the nature of debaters, members of HEDS couldn’t just stand still and give up their potential to the realm of nothingness. On August 2008, there’s a huge initiative to rebond Hasanuddin debaters again under the HEDS banner. So the reawakening momentum of HEDS started from that point. Less-fortunately, the fist year of reawakening process wasn’t running as smooth as it is formerly expected. HEDS’ great plan to conduct the first Eastern Indonesia English Debating Championship (EIEDC) together with several other agenda planned was failed.
But still, failed at the first year initiative wouldn’t stop HEDS to roam the debating world. This year, under a new presidency, HEDS is finally shown its real existence to the rest of the university. HEDS was able to set their stand and spot his secretariat office inside the Office of American Corner, Unhas Public Library. HEDS grand opening recruitment for new members was unbelievably a huge success. Through the effort of distributing pamphlets, spreading the information via internet, and promoting HEDS to all freshmen via Library Tour, HEDS was able to gain public attention. As the result, more than a hundred new members apply for the admission test and interview. At the end of the selection process, HEDS recruitment phase was able to born 61 newbies who are all ready to fight on to continue HEDS struggle in debating realm.
So be ready for a revolution!
